Nanofiltration equipment and mode of operation are very similar to reverse osmosis. By nanofiltration organics and ions with more than one negative charge such as sulfate or phosphate can be separated while passing single charged ions. This effect has proven desirable for a number of applications where moderate salt removal is acceptable since operating pressure and power consumption are significantly lower than in reverse osmosis.
